Pinterest gets manlier as men become its fastest growing demographic

By a show of hands, how many guys are on Pinterest? You might be surprised to hear that men are actually the fastest growing demographic on Pinterest. Just last year, the number of guys on Pinterest doubled – and one third of all sign ups were men. With more men joining Pinterest every day, brands are adjusting their social media strategies to include the male demographic.

In the same way that women use Pinterest to find recipes, creative DIY projects, and outfit ideas – men are using Pinterest to find what interests them. Recently, Pinterest has also introduced Guided Search, a new feature that customizes search results based on users’ interests. Pinterest engineer Pei Yin described how this search can help men.

For example, say you’re looking for a new watch. Before when you searched Pinterest for “watches,” your results would include mostly women’s timepieces. But now, men will see Pins and guides inspired by what other guys have Pinned, and everybody’s results should feel a lot closer to what they’re looking for. Of course if you ever want results for another gender, like if you’re shopping for a gift for someone else, you can always use the guides to fine-tune your search.”

So what kind of categories are men interested in? According to Pinterest, the top categories are: Geek, Cars & Motorcycles, Men’s Fashion, Gardening, Architecture, Humour and Health & Fitness. Brands like Harley Davidson, Esquire and ESPN have already set up Pinterest boards geared to reach males.
